PT Krakatau Chandra Energi Grows New Renewable Energy Mix Through Completion of Krakatau Posco's Solar Power Plant Construction

Tuesday 12:08 / Feb 04, 2025

Jakarta, November 21, 2024 - PT Krakatau Chandra Energi (KCE), a reliable and competitive provider of electricity, electricity services and new renewable energy (EBT) in Indonesia, has completed the construction and distribution of energy through a 1.2 MWp Rooftop Solar Power Plant (PLTS) built on the roof of the Hot Rolling Plant (HRP) of PT Krakatau Posco (KP). The construction and operation of this PLTS adds to the renewable energy capacity mix in the Krakatau Industrial Estate (KIK) to now reach a total of 2.2 MWp.

Since 2020, KCE has built PLTS both in the form of Rooftop, Ground-Mounted and Floating Solar PV. In addition to its own needs and for customers at KIK, KCE's EBT business also serves residential customers in the Cilegon and Jakarta areas. Several schemes are also offered to customers, in the form of zero investment, lease and purchase (direct purchase and installation).

KP itself cooperates with KCE as a partner in the construction of rooftop solar power plants in the Main Office Building and HRP Coil Yard. In the first building, KCE built PLTS with a capacity of 125 kWp using PV modules with a capacity of 575 Wp as many as 216 units and one inverter with a capacity of 100 kWp. Meanwhile, the rooftop solar power plant in the Coil Yard HRP building has a capacity of 1.12 MWp, using PV modules with a similar capacity of 1,944 units and eight inverters with a capacity of 115 kWp. Both rooftop PV plants are projected to reduce carbon emissions by 1,407.2 tons of CO2 equivalent per year or the equivalent of planting approximately 70 thousand to 80 thousand trees per year.

The Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between KCE and KP was signed in November 2023 and the project was completed on time in October 2024. The inauguration of the rooftop solar power plant was held at the KP Headquarter Auditorium and attended by the Board of Directors and Management of KCE and KP.

President Director of KCE, Erri Dewi Riani said that the construction of KP's Solar PV is an important achievement in KCE's efforts to provide clean and sustainable energy solutions in KIK and emphasizes the Company's commitment to providing reliable energy.

“As part of the Chandra Asri Group, we continue to make various efforts to support Indonesia in the use of new renewable energy. PLTS KP is not just a construction of a power plant installation, but also to encourage the growth of decarbonization. We hope this step can have a positive impact, both economically and environmentally,” said Erri.

KCE itself is committed to supporting the government in achieving Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2060 and introducing KCE's role as an Energy Service Company (ESCO) providing electricity and renewable energy that can provide efficiency for the company's operations.

“With the presence of PLTS with a capacity of 1.2 MWp at Krakatau Posco HRP which uses materials with TKDN reaching 59% and in accordance with applicable safety standards, we hope that Krakatau Posco can continue to optimize the use of clean energy at other Krakatau Posco plants. In addition, thanks to this collaboration, KCE has also succeeded in increasing its EBT capacity mix to 2.2 MWp, consisting of various types of solar power plants, namely ground-mounted, rooftop and floating,” added Erri.

President Director of PT Krakatau Posco, Jung Bum-Su, said, as one of the integrated steel mills in Indonesia, Krakatau Posco strictly complies with regulations related to climate change and carbon emission reduction. “Low-carbon steel production can increase competitiveness in the global steel market. For this reason, we must immediately respond by starting to implement a strategy to use renewable energy through the solar power plant construction project with KCE. Thanks to this collaboration with KCE, we can reduce carbon emissions by 1,400 tons per year, reduce energy costs from the production process and achieve Zero Accidents thanks to maximum efforts in implementing safety regulations by KP and KCE,” said Jung Bum-Su.

“For KCE, as a producer of electrical energy, this collaboration also contributes to efforts to increase the proportion of the national renewable energy mix in line with the target of achieving NZE by 2060. We hope that the cooperation between KP and KCE in the implementation of renewable energy will continue to grow sustainably,” he added.

In the future, KCE plans to continue developing its renewable energy production capacity through several initiatives, including investment in solar power plant construction projects, including floating solar power plants. In addition, KCE is also collaborating with strategic partners in various sectors to expand its service coverage and capacity as well as adopting the latest technologies that can improve efficiency and effectiveness in renewable energy production.
